Azoulay, an alumnus (BFA and MFA) of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, resides in Jerusalem, this city of contradictions; a city in which fantasy and reality are shattered and born anew day in day out. His works juxtapose these poles. In various interviews he gave, Azoulay, who was born in the northern town of Kiryat Shmona, on Israel’s border with Lebanon, recounts how his childhood was marked by daily sprints to the bomb shelter. His family then moved to a very different area in Israel’s Negev desert, to Arad, a town in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by dunes, with a herd of goats or a donkey caravan crossing the hills every now and then. These oppositions—life in the shadow of a daily threat in contrast with tranquility; the mountainous, green landscape of the north in contrast with the arid desert vistas of the south—are all recognizable in his paintings.
